Hike. Newell's Nob

End:
Sat, 09/20/2008 - 4:00pm

hikeMeet at RVUUF at noon to carpool to "Newell's Nob" off Shale City Road to hike with Environmental Action. Never heard of this site? It's informally named BLM land near Grizzly Peak, but hardly anyone has gone there in modern times other than our own Diane "Newell" Meyer, who knows it well and wants to share the beauty of its scarps, vistas, and ponds with us. We will actually take a series of short hikes to better explore the area, much as we did with the nearby roadless part of Grizzly Peak (stewardship project 2001-03). There may be stewardship possibilities at Newell Nob too, but we're just going to explore and enjoy it Sept. 20th. For the trip and short hikes, you'll need long pants, sturdy shoes or boots, water, and a late lunch or snacks. Wear or bring layers, because it could be colder up there (above 5,000 ft.).

earthIt's not too late to sign up for Discovering a Sense of Place -- Sign-up sheets are on table at back of Great Hall. For $20 you will receive a book with a set of informative and inspirational readings for each of the seven discussion sessions to be held each Thurs from 3-4:30pm beginning Sep 25th. An eighth session will be a Celebration of our new understanding and ability to live our Seventh Principle individually and in community.

Have you ever wondered how you could possibly do enough to lessen your contribution to atmospheric CO2? Have you ever thought that some of the things we've been asked to do lately -- like hang the clothes outside, or take the bus rather than drive -- were just too much trouble? And anyway, nobody else is doing it.

The Northwest Earth Institute (NWEI) of Portland is devoted to presenting “... innovative programs that empower individuals and organizations to preserve life-sustaining ecological systems.” As a way to help you find new ways to honor our particular and unique piece of Planet Earth, and to help us work with our community to sustain it, the Environmental Group will present a seven-session discussion course designed by the NWEI and called Discovering a Sense of Place. Some of the topics included are: Responsibility to Place, Knowing Your Bioregion, Mapping Your Place, Building Community. Each discussion will be in a group of 6 to 12 people, facilitated by a different participant each session, based on required reading from the book prepared by NWEI for this course.

The book is now in the RVUUF Library waiting for you to look through it. Participating in this course will enhance your understanding and ability to live our UU Seventh Principle. It will become part of what we do to become a Green Sanctuary. Contact: Miriam Nunnally or Steve Bowman.

Do you have any unwanted soaker hose or garden tools or a small garden bench that you would like to contribute to the Garden? We are also looking for large stones, pieces of concrete or cinder blocks to form the edges to the raised beds. Contact Aubree Johnson or Jan Limb
